Transferred real-time, using an ATR-modified Ampex Tape Machine with flux magnetic heads, by Matthew Luthans at Blue Heaven Studios. Custom slipcase cover. Buena Vista Social Club is both the name given to this extraordinary group of musicians and the album, recorded in just seven days in 1996 in Havana's 1950s vintage EGREM studios. From the infectious energy of "Chan Chan" to the heartfelt nostalgia of "Dos Gardenias," each track immerses listeners in the intoxicating blend of son, bolero, and guajira styles. Led by legendary musicians such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Omara Portuondo, the Buena Vista Social Club ensemble delivers performances that are as exuberant as they are intimate, capturing the essence of a bygone era while igniting a passion for Cuban music that knows no bounds. The acclaim of the original album has elevated the artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González and Omara Portuondo) to superstar status, inspired an award-winning film by Wim Wenders, and has contributed to popularizing Cuba's rich musical heritage. Each title a 15 ips, ¼-inch 2-track (½ track) analog tape copy Sourced from original master tapes Transferred using ATR-modified Ampex Tape Machine with flux magnetic heads Custom slipcase cover — highest quality tape reissue! A Love Supreme is John Coltrane's classic album originally released in 1965 on Impulse! Records. Coltrane's immortal A Love Supreme (1964) and Ballads (1963) both are music landmarks. Here, with our Ultra Tape 15 ips 1/4-inch analog tape copy, the music sounds its purest and most vital. The tape playback brings crystal clear fidelity to the highest and lowest freqency ranges. The original master tape is available but it's not in the best shape. This tape transfer is from a flat tape copy made by Rudy Van Gelder and used for cutting in the U.K. in April of 1965. Of course, the original recording was in December '64, so only a handful of months later. This tape was discovered at Abbey Road and had been untouched between 1965 and 2002. So while the original tape is available and while we would always opt for the original whenever we can, in this case this copy was the better choice as the tape has incurred less overall wear and sounds much better than the original. Jazz critics have lauded A Love Supreme as Coltrane's most important recording. The rave reviews that appeared in the magazines Downbeat, Jazz Hot, Jazz Podium and Swing Journal reflected this: critics all over the world, in America, Europe and Japan recognized Coltrane's declaration that his musical devotion was now intertwined with his faith in God. In many ways, the album mirrors Coltrane's spiritual quest that grew out of his personal troubles, including a long struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. From the opening gong and tenor saxophone flutter, a four-note bass line builds under the sound. This simple riff becomes the musical framework for the rich improvisations that comprise John Coltrane's 33-minute musical journey.

Each title a 15 ips, ¼-inch 2-track (½ track) analog tape copy Sourced from original master tapes Transferred using ATR-modified Ampex Tape Machine with flux magnetic heads Custom slipcase cover — highest quality tape reissue! "My first introduction to this outstanding Rudy van Gelder recording dates back to the '90's JVC's XRCD series. Since then, I've acquired different versions on LP, each one being a step better, culminating in the 45 rpm reissue. And now we have it in the ultimate format 15-ips reel-to-tape. Here we find the aptly titled Ballads featuring a much mellower version of Coltrane, backed by the likes of McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Or as Ashley Kahn wrote, 'In 1963 had Impulse decided to title his new album something like Coltrane Plays for Lovers Only rather than Ballads, it would have been cliché, but more accurate.' Nothing could be closer to the truth and just a great demonstration of Coltrane's incredible talent." — Myles B. Astor, Positive Feedback, 2022 Writer's Choice Awards A.B. Spellman, former administrator for the National Endowment for the Arts, once described Ballads as "some of the most sensitive, heartfelt music that any lover ever sang on a horn." Put simply, most guys don't play the saxophone like John Coltrane. And even the finest-sounding LPs can't match the fidelity and sonic detail captured by a master tape. Here, with our Ultra Tape 15 ips 1/4-inch analog tape copy, the music sounds its purest and most vital. The tape playback brings crystal clear fidelity to the highest and lowest freqency ranges. The intense passionate Coltrane interpretation of standards such as "All Or Nothing At All," "What's New," "It's Easy To Remember" and the Sinatra classic "Nancy (With The Laughing Face)" are the essence of Ballads. When asked why attempt such an undertaking, Coltrane replied "Variety." While it may have been a short detour by Trane before he exploded off into the nether regions of jazz music a few years later, it is still a fantastic document of one of the premier jazz groups of the 1960s. Recorded December 21, 1961 and September 18 & November 13, 1962 at Rudy Van Gelder Studios.

When Jim Davis started producing records at Verve, he changed the company's recording philosophy toward its most prolific instrumentalist. Where Norman Granz had produced countless Oscar Peterson albums dedicated to the popular song, Davis was more interested in making albums closer to how the Peterson trio sounded live. His first Peterson records were the legendary London House sessions. By the time of this album, there had been no personnel change in the trio for five years - so it is no surprise that the rapport among the musicians here is telepathic. Originally released in 1964. Since its original release on LP in the mid-1950s, Fritz Reiner's rendition of the "Concerto for Orchestra" has stood as the standard against which all other recordings of the work are measured. Reiner's superb control of his orchestra and of Bartók's rhythms and textures is still unsurpassed, even by dozens of subsequent conductors in the digital age. Likewise, the "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta" shows just what an incredible ensemble the Chicago Symphony was under Reiner's direction.

Positive Feedback magazine Writer's Choice Awards for 2017! "One area where the tape truly stands (out) with both pieces lies in its ability to reveal subtleties during louder passages. Not to mention the tone in the lower registers of reed instruments. The attack and decay of individual instruments and mood swings on a dime. The strike and ringing of triangles (are) unlike you'll ever hear on LP. Plus the recording's crystalline-like transparency allows more of the sense of Chicago Symphony Hall to emerge." — Myles B. Astor, Senior Editor, Positive Feedback magazine, January 12, 2018. Read the whole review here. Astor also reviewed Lt. Kije here for the magazine's Writer's Choice Awards 2017 "Number six on Sid Marks' all time RCA Living Stereo list (Ultimate Audio, vol.3, no.4, pgs.72-76, 2000) and for good reason. To quote Sid, 'From tonal qualities to dynamics, staging and ambience, this beauty has always been among the brightest of stars in the RCA analog heaven.' Sid might even after hearing this 15 ips reel-to-reel tape reissue rank this recording even higher. Two of the greatest Russian composers. Two great tales. One of a fake soldier and the other a fake nightingale. Reiner and the CSO at their best and unbelievable sonics some 60 years ago all wrapped up into one. "This tape is a system buster! Word of warning! Play the tape the first time through at lower than normal volume levels. There isn't another tape, LP or CD with greater dynamic range. A very few recordings may equal but none will surpass the feeling of an orchestra playing in your listening room. Oh, those Chicago strings! Buy the Acoustic Sounds remastered LP if you don't own a tape machine!" — Myles B. Astor, Senior Editor, Positive Feedback magazine From Acoustic Sounds, Inc., the world leader in audiophile music sales, comes the highest quality analog reel-to-reel tape album reissues — Analogue Productions Ultra Tape! The sound is truly wonderful on the Stravinsky too. The original 3-track session tapes were used in mastering for LPs and SACDs. Truly one of Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony's best. Originally released in 2003, the fourth studio album by the rock duo the White Stripes was an extraordinary success. It peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard charts and topped the U.K. Albums Charts. To date it's sold 4 million copies worldwide, achieving platinum-sales certification from the Recording Industry Association of America and 3x platinum from the British Phonographic Industry. It spawned the hit single "Seven Nation Army," the band's signature track that's become a sports anthem, plus the hits "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself," "The Hardest Button to Button" and "There's No Home for You Here." Elephant has received critical acclaim and it's often cited as the White Stripe's best work, including receiving a nomination for Album of the Year and a win for Best Alternative Music Album at the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004. Rolling Stone ranked the album No. 449 on its 2020 list of the 500 Best Albums of All Time. The Stripes, it said, exploded out of Detroit with a minimalist garage-blues attack: just Jack White on guitar and Meg White on drums, taking on the world.

The first two titles — Janis Ian's Breaking Silence and Ben Webster's Gentle Ben are releasing before 2016 ends. A highly sought-after RCA shaded dog Living Stereo title, the performance and sonics found within these two classic albums rate a 10/10. Led by conductor Fritz Reiner and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, this is a must have — the dynamics are monstrous! Whichever other Respighi tone poem recordings you ultimately purchase, you MUST own this one. Since the early ‘60s it has been the standard by which all others have been judged, and in terms of both sound and performance, it has never really been surpassed. The final March of Pines is simply incredible: Thundering bass drum, crashing cymbals and gongs, bellowing brass — nobody since has brought the whole thing off with the same combination of excitement and discipline. "After a long wait, my copy of Analog Productions Muddy Waters - Folk Singer (Ultra Tape) 1/4 Inch - 15 IPS Tape finally arrived today. Mamma Mia! I'll write in more detail in upcoming reviews in due course, but there is something fundamentally right about the sonic scope and raw music that comes through this format. The lack of a mechanical imprint, which even the best digital is not free of, and the dynamic freedom is simply the charts. The packaging, the quality of the printing, and the overall experience of this format scream quality at every turn. Extremely impressive! You can call me a convert!" — Matej Isak, monoandstereo.com. "My first reaction when Chad Kassem told me at a recent audio show that Muddy Water's Folk Singer would highlight Acoustic Sound's second series of 15-ips tape releases was complete shock. Not for long, though, as exhilaration rapidly starting coursing through my body. What audiophile in their right mind with a tape machine wouldn't want a 15-ips tape copy of this classic Chess Records recording? One that has an extra, unlisted tenth track of Waters's 'You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had' (taken from an April 1964 recording session) that's not on the original album. For good reason, too, as this new 15-ips tape copy lives up to and exceeds even the most lofty expectations. The tape just brings this 1963 recording to life in new and unexpected ways whether it be foot taps, the sound of Guy's guitar and reverb trails." — Myles B. Astor, Positive Feedback.com, Issue 100, Nov. 1, 2018. Read the entire review here. "The Muddy Waters is the best sounding tape I have ever heard. It's beyond any expectation of what any tape could ever sound like. It sounded like Muddy was in our room! He came alive. It makes it all worthwhile. The packaging is over the top. It is heirloom quality. All you can say is: 'Holy Shit!' You nailed it." - Tom Caselli, Alpharetta, Georgia From Analogue Productions comes another classic title in our Ultra Tape reel-to-reel album reissue series. Each is a 15 ips, ¼-inch analog tape copy (IEC equalization) sourced from a copy of the original analog master tape. Transferred real-time, using an ATR-modified Ampex Tape Machine with flux magnetic heads. Custom slipcase cover. There are a handful of landmark albums in any genre. In the blues, one of them is Muddy Waters' Folk Singer. Originally released in 1964, Folk Singer was the only acoustic album Waters ever recorded, thus becoming the first and perhaps best blues concept album ever. Muddy of course started out playing acoustic blues in the Delta, and he's clearly very comfortable in this return to his roots, which was designed to appeal to the mid-1960s surge of interest in folk music. Muddy's supporting cast includes a very young Buddy Guy on guitar, Willie Dixon at the upright bass and Clifton James on drums. This recording has enormous presence with ample room for Muddy's booming voice to resonate.

The first two titles — Janis Ian's Breaking Silence and Ben Webster's Gentle Ben are releasing before 2016 ends. Gentle Ben was made 10 months before Ben Webster's death in 1972. Webster, who had left the United States in 1965 to settle in Europe — first in Copenhagen and then in Amsterdam — was visiting fellow musician and friend Tete Montoliu in Barcelona. Webster and pianist Montoliu went back a ways, having played together regularly in Webster's Copenhagen days. In fact, Montoliu cited Webster and Don Byas as his two chief musical influences. Webster and Montoliu understood each other deeply, and their comfort with on another is palpable in this recording. Their accompaniment of one another is seamless. On board with these two is Montoliu's regular working trio-mates, Eric Peter on bass and Peer Wyboris on drums. There's no shortage of Webster's trademark breathy, fat tenor tone here. In fact, given the sparse arrangement, that rich, humid, giant sax blooms like on few other recordings. Highlights include "Ben's Blues," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "The Man I Love" and "Don't Blame Me." Each Ultra Tape reissue copy is priced at $450. The entire series is available by subscription. What a group of heavy-weight performers! Besides Oliver Nelson on tenor sax, you've got the incomparable Bill Evans on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Paul Chambers on bass, Roy Haynes on drums, and Eric Dolphy on flute and alto sax. This is the jazz equivalent of a super-group." — Jim Hannon, AVguide.com As Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues And The Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic "Stolen Moments," but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to for an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section. Originally released in 1961.
