Records catalogs. The 2026 slate places a special spotlight on landmark Impulse! Records sessions and classic Verve titles spanning the labels' storied histories. All titles are mastered from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl and packaged by Stoughton Printing Co. in high-quality gatefold sleeves with tip-on jackets. The releases are supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the world's largest source for audiophile recordings. Recorded August 17-18, 1964, in New York and released on Verve the same year, Plus One pairs the impeccably unified Oscar Peterson Trio - Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen — with the warm-toned, inventive, and rhythmically buoyant Clark Terry, whose trumpet, flugelhorn, and signature "mumbles" scat style bring a fresh contrast that still fits seamlessly within the trio's refined framework. Showcasing Terry's crisp articulation, plush tone, and playful vocalizing on tracks like "Mumbles," the album balances tight structural clarity on pieces such as "Brotherhood of Man" with more spacious, lyrical moments like the ballad "Jim," all underscored by Peterson's elegance and the trio's instinctive cohesion. Concise, polished, and shaped by the easy rapport of four major jazz voices, Plus One stands as a quintessential mid-1960s Verve session and a snapshot of Peterson expanding his studio collaborations while preserving the trio's core identity.

Highlights include Peterson's first recorded version of Bill Evans's "Waltz for Debby," shaped with lyricism and quiet structural control, and Brown's buoyant "Gravy Waltz," co-written with Steve Allen, which showcases the ensemble's rhythmic intuition and later won the 1963 Grammy Award for Best Original Jazz Composition. Often considered one of Peterson's more understated early-1960s statements, Affinity endures as an essential Verve recording, reflecting a trio moving with confidence, curiosity, and unity of purpose during a period of intense artistic growth.

Burrell's clean melodic lines and subtle comping mesh with Smith's harmonically rich phrasing, while Tate's crisp, steady time anchors the trio across a program that includes the driving title track, the reflective "I'll Close My Eyes," and the blues-inflected "Blues for J." A commercial success and one of the most enduring small-group albums of Smith's Verve years, the record reaffirmed the trio as a central vehicle for his artistry and remains a defining document of his mid-1960s style.

Oliver Nelson's dynamic big-band arrangements — most famously on the breakout hit "Walk on the Wild Side," which reached No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 — gave Smith a dramatic, brass-driven setting that expanded his audience and showcased the power of his Hammond B-3 in a cinematic frame. By contrast, the trio performances with guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey highlight the subtle swing, blues feeling, and elastic phrasing that remained at the core of his artistry. Together, the contrasting ensembles reveal Smith's versatility at a key transitional moment, making Bashin' one of the most significant and enduring entries in his Verve catalog.

Ben Webster had long before passed through the ranks of imitator, then pupil and finally master. His "college attendance," as one might put it, in the Duke Ellington Orchestra gave him a sureness of expression in his great showpieces and he also learned to hold his own against such musical giants as Paul Gonsalves and Jimmy Hamilton. "Hawk" was able to thoroughly enjoy his fame in numerous Jazz At The Philharmonic concerts given all over the world, where, of course, he had to assert himself against many other saxophone players. Two such JATP ensembles are to be found on the Confrères LP. The relaxed atmosphere is particularly noticeable in the title "Sunday" in which Roy Eldridge comes into the limelight with a brilliant solo. And just listen to George Buvivier's marvelous bass playing (in "Nabab!") where he certainly has no reason to hide in the shadow thrown by Ray Brown. Coleman Hawkins' voluminous, supple sound which had a great influence on the styles of musicians ranging from Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins up to Joe Lovano, is best heard after Roy's solo in "Honey Flower."

All-analog mastering by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab     180-gram LPs pressed at Quality Record Pressings!   Stoughton Printing gatefold old-style tip-on jackets Series supervised by Chad Kassem CEO of Acoustic Sounds The John Coltrane Quartet Plays is great music from a great musician. On that basis alone, adding this sublime 1965 classic from Impulse! to a well-rounded jazz music collection is an easy choice. This isn't just another album; it's a testament to Coltrane's innovative spirit and a showcase of the classic quartet's electrifying chemistry. Featuring the incomparable McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, this is a group renowned for its dynamic interaction and sensitive playing. Released shortly after the landmark A Love Supreme, what changed here was Coltrane's intentions. "Chim Chim Cheree" is full of foreboding. The fury with which he improvises (on soprano sax) on this track is an example of how all through this recording the intensity has been turned up a notch.  Prepare to be surprised and delighted by Coltrane's unique interpretation of the standard "Nature Boy" (featuring Art Davis on a second bass for an extra layer of sonic depth!) alongside his powerful originals such as "Brazilia" and "Song of Praise". You'll hear these familiar tunes in a way you've never imagined, filtered through Coltrane's genius and the quartet's boundless creativity. The quartet is locked in, pushing and pulling, creating a sonic landscape that's both powerful and intricate. Why you need this in your jazz collection: It's more than just notes. Coltrane's music goes beyond technical brilliance; it's infused with a deeply personal and searching spirit. This album offers a glimpse into the soul of an artist constantly striving for greater clarity of vision, making it not just great music, but a deeply moving experience. Our Acoustic Sounds Series reissue of The John Coltrane Quartet Plays takes this exceptional Coltrane hallmark and endows it with sparkle, sonic clarity and richness of sound that Acoustic Sounds is known for capturing. Featuring all-analog mastering by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, together with premier pressing by Quality Record Pressings on a 180-gram virtually-silent playing surface, housed in a Stoughton Printing tip-on jacket, this is an essential listen for any jazz enthusiast. It's a journey of sound and emotion, delivered by one of the most influential groups in jazz history. Get ready to be swept away!

Recorded on November 17th, 1959, Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges has been heralded as one of Mulligan's best collaborations with fellow instrumentalists. On this date, the two saxophonists were joined by a solid rhythm section of Claude Williamson (piano), Buddy Clark (bass), and Mel Lewis (drums). The tracklist pulls from both artist's repertoires, featuring three originals each from Mulligan and Hodges. The two complement the other throughout with the exception of Mulligan's "What's the Rush," where the baritonist sits out altogether in favor of Hodges' alto taking the spotlight. Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges is the second Hodges collaboration to be reissued by Verve. Earlier this year, Acoustic Sounds re-released Side By Side, one of two 1959 LPs he recorded with Duke Ellington. The Acoustic Sounds series has been ongoing since 2020, reissuing a vast collection of records from Verve/UMe's rich archive. Artists featured have included icons such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fiztgerald, Nina Simone, and many more.

The releases are supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the world's largest source for audiophile recordings. Included in the December title releases for the the series is the iconic Peggy Lee's first 12-inch album, Black Coffee (1956). Black Coffee was Peggy Lee's album smash for Decca (she left Capitol in 1952 over creative, artistic differences) and it offered her an intimate stage with a small jazz combo, exchanging her usual jazz-pop style with a big band or orchestra. This smaller combination worked to perfection. "Encouraged by longtime Decca A&R Milt Gabler, she hired a small group including trumpeter Pete Candoli and pianist Jimmy Rowles (two of her favorite sidemen) to record an after-hours jazz project similar in intent and execution to Lee Wiley's "Manhattan project" of 1950, Night in Manhattan. While the title-track opener of Black Coffee soon separated itself from the LP — to be taught forever after during the first period of any Torch Song 101 class — the album doesn't keep to its concept very long; Lee is soon enough in a bouncy mood for 'I've Got You Under My Skin' and very affectionate on 'Easy Living.' (If there's a concept at work here, it's the vagaries of love.) Listeners should look instead to 'It Ain't Necessarily So' or 'Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good to You?' for more examples of Lee's quintessentially slow-burn sultriness. Aside from occasionally straying off-concept, however, Black Coffee is an excellent record, spotlighting Lee's ability to shine with every type of group and in any context." — AllMusic "Each step in our production process — from title selection to mastering, pressing and packaging — is designed to meet the highest standards, and we want everyone who hears these albums to feel the love and hard work we put into everything we do," says Chad Kassem CEO of Acoustic Sounds.

Monthly releases highlighting the world's most historic and best jazz records! All-analog mastering by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab 180-gram vinyl pressed at Quality Record Pressings When Norman Granz signed Johnny Hodges to a recording contract in 1951, it was a prelude to Hodges' leaving the Duke Ellington orchestra to lead his own small band. Four years later Hodges was back in the Ellington fold, but he continued to record for Granz under his own name. Side By Side, recorded in 1958 and 1959, is a throwback to the small-group sessions Ellington recorded with Hodges and other members of his orchestra in the 1930s, but with a couple of important differences: the absence of Ellington himself on several cuts (with Billy Strayhorn taking over on piano), and the presence of such notable non-Ellingtonians as drummer Jo Jones and trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison. Mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab from the original analog tapes 180-gram LPs pressed at Quality Record Pressings! Stoughton Printing gatefold old-style tip-on jackets Series supervised by Chad Kassem CEO of Acoustic Sounds John Lee Hooker's style of guitar playing has been imitated but never matched. The iconic bluesman's 1966 album It Serve You Right to Suffer for Impulse! was unusual because it teamed him with a jazz ensemble rather than a typical blues band. This setup was part of Impulse!'s broader effort to explore and expand the boundaries between jazz, blues, and other genres. The collaboration was partly driven by the growing interest in the blues among jazz audiences in the 1960s. Hooker's raw, emotional music resonated with the improvisational spirit of jazz. Impulse! wanted to showcase his talents in a new light by pairing him with a sophisticated jazz rhythm section — guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Panama Francis. These musicians had deep jazz credentials but were flexible enough to adapt to Hooker's deeply personal and rhythmically unique style. The producer was Bob Thiele, head of the foundational jazz label Impulse! Records. The idea was to keep the tracklist down to just eight songs and let each one inhabit a mood, unencumbered by commercial demands for a single. The album combined Hooker's earthy, hypnotic blues sound with the polished backing of the jazz combo. Hooker's deep, gravelly voice and his raw, syncopated guitar riffs stood at the forefront, while the jazz players added a smoother, more textured groove underneath. The result was a unique fusion: it retained the grit and authenticity of Hooker's Delta blues roots but added a subtle, swinging sophistication. It Serve You Right to Suffer stands out in Hooker's discography because it formed a bridge between blues and jazz. It introduced Hooker's music to a broader audience and showcased his adaptability as an artist. For blues fans, it highlighted the universality of Hooker's sound; for jazz fans, it was a chance to experience blues in a more refined context.
