The Staple Singers – Hit Singles
34,00 €Add to cartTwo monumental hits, cut at 45 on 180-gram vinyl. Mastered by Kevin Gray & Steve Hoffman at AcousTech Mastering from the original analog tapes! "I’ll Take You There" (Side 1) A beautiful and now instantly-recognizable call-and-response chorus that scored a smash Number One hit on the Billboard charts of 1972. The backing instrumentation is simple with almost no changes. Atop that rock-solid foundation, we’re taken "there" with, "I know a place/Ain't nobody crying/Ain't nobody worried/Ain't no smiling faces/Lying to the races/Help me (backing vocals: "I'll take you there)." "Respect Yourself" (Side 2) The Staple Singers' 1972 hit that rose to Number Two on the Billboard charts, and, along with "I'll Take You There," affirmed this Chicago group as stars of the soul and pop worlds. The song begins with a blues-tinged electric piano introduction and then builds to a crescendo full of inspiration. Pops Staples begins the lyrics with, "If you disrespect anyone that you're running to/How in the world do you think anybody's supposed to respect you/If you don't give a heck about the man with the Bible in his hand/Just get out the way and let the gentleman do his thing." Pops' daughter Mavis, an absolute vocal giant, then takes over the vocals with, "If you're walking 'round thinking that the world owes you something 'cause you're here/You're going out the world backwards like you did when you first come here/You curse around women but you don't even know their name/Then you’re dumb enough to think it'll make you a big ol' man." Analogue Productions introduced test pressings from their Stax Records reissue at the June 2003 Home Entertainment Expo in San Francisco. Among the exhibitors to show off their wares using these yet-to-be-released 45s was Richard Vandersteen of Vandersteen Audio. "It was a big hit. The visitors packed the room every time we put it on. For once at one of these shows, there was some music that people wanted to hear. I mean, famous, classic music sounding incredible. It's just great old music that sounds much better than it ever had before. The people just loved it, and we loved playing it." - Richard Vandersteen, Vandersteen Audio

Thelonious Monk – 5 by Monk by 5
58,00 €Add to cartThelonious Monk — 5 by Monk by 5 One of seven standout Thelonious Monk albums from the Riverside Records catalog! Reissued on 180-gram vinyl by Analogue Productions! Mastered AAA by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tape Pressed at Quality Record Pressings Despite various reissue formats over several decades, the seven original LPs contained in Thelonious Monk — The Riverside Tenor Sessions stood perfectly well on their own at the time of initial release and remain among the highest achievements of a truly golden age. Recorded and released between 1956 and 1961, these seven Monk combo albums were critical in Monk's emergence from a decade of ridicule and neglect to his status at the pinnacle of the jazz pantheon. 5 by Monk by 5 was deliberately conceived and executed as a quintet album. The "five" are made up of what was, at the time of the 1959 sessions, Monk's regular working quartet plus Thad Jones. That is to say, a well-integrated unit with a striking added voice absorbed into it. The album consists of two new Monk compositions and reworkings of three earlier numbers. This is a classic album with a lively quintet that includes Monk, piano; Thad Jones, cornet; Sam Jones, bass; Art Taylor, drums and the amazing Charlie Rouse, tenor sax — here just beginning a very fruitful association with Monk — and really adding a lot to the session with some incredible tenor work that's as angular and modern as needed for Monk's work, yet with a soulful edge that really brings a lot to the music. The album's got five long tracks — hence the title — and they're all Monk classics that include "I Mean You," "Ask Me Now," "Jackie-ing," and "Straight No Chaser." In addition to some of his best recorded piano performances and more than two dozen of his profoundly personal compositions, the albums in this reissue series provide an overview of the era's major tenor saxophonists, with contributions by Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Charlie Rouse and Harold Land. Max Roach, Art Blakely, Roy Haynes and Thad Jones are among the other jazz immortals featured on the essential Brilliant Corners, Monk's Music: Thelonious Monk Septet, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, Thelonious in Action, Misterioso, 5 by Monk by 5 and Quartet Plus Two At The Blackhawk.

Recorded and released between 1956 and 1961, these seven Monk combo albums were critical in Monk's emergence from a decade of ridicule and neglect to his status at the pinnacle of the jazz pantheon. For Thelonious in Action, Monk recorded live at the Five Spot Café in the Bowery neighborhood of Manhattan on August 7, 1958, at the same sessions that produced Misterioso. One of New York's most celebrated jazz rooms, the Five Spot is where Monk first emerged into the spotlight. With him on this date was tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, drummer Roy Haynes, and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik. They created two highly memorable in-performance albums (of which this is the first) of classic Monk repertoire. From the moment Monk's fingers touch the keys on the opening track, "Light Blue," the listener is transported into a world of musical virtuosity and improvisational brilliance. Thelonious Monk – Monk’s Music
58,00 €Add to cartThelonious Monk — Monk's Music: Thelonious Monk Septet One of seven standout Thelonious Monk albums from the Riverside Records catalog! Monk's Music is a landmark in jazz — easily one of Thelonious Monk's greatest albums ever, and a magical crossroads of talents that brings together a variety of jazz traditions! The work is performed by an ambitious Monk septet that includes both Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane on tenor sax — and if you've ever doubted the brilliance of Hawk, this is the record to change your mind. The rest of the group is equally great — with Ray Copeland on trumpet, Gigi Gryce on alto, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Art Blakey on drums — all coming together with Monk to craft a perfect set of tunes that are virtually the definition of "modern jazz." Titles include "Abide With Me," "Off Minor," "Crepuscule With Nellie," and "Epistrophy." It's probably true that Monk's own ability to translate his ideas into actual piano performance has seldom if ever been at a higher level of skill and clarity than here on Monk's Music. In addition to some of his best recorded piano performances and more than two dozen of his profoundly personal compositions, the albums in this reissue series provide an overview of the era's major tenor saxophonists, with contributions by Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Charlie Rouse and Harold Land. Reissued on 180-gram vinyl by Analogue Productions! Recorded and released between 1956 and 1961, these seven Monk combo albums were critical in Monk's emergence from a decade of ridicule and neglect to his status at the pinnacle of the jazz pantheon. One of the most significant events in jazz took place in the latter part of 1957 at the Five Spot in New York, where the Thelonious Monk quartet featuring John Coltrane on tenor saxophone was in residence. The music that Monk made with Coltrane quickly attained the status of legend. Although the group remained together for only a half-year, those who were lucky enough to witness them play called it electrifying. The recordings on Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane are more Monk's than Coltrane's — Monk was signed to Riverside at the time — and the set mixes in three quartet tracks that have the pair working with Wilbur Ware on bass and Shadow Wilson on drums — plus two more from the sessions for the famous Monk's Music record — alternate takes from those sessions, with a larger group that features Gigi Gryce on alto, Coleman Hawkins on additional tenor, and Ray Copeland on trumpet! Quartet tracks include "Ruby My Dear", "Trinkle Trinkle", and "Nutty" — with the larger group on alternates of "Off Minor" and "Epistrophy" — and a solo performance by Monk on an alternate of "Functional." In addition to some of his best recorded piano performances and more than two dozen of his profoundly personal compositions, the albums in this reissue series provide an overview of the era's major tenor saxophonists, with contributions by Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Charlie Rouse and Harold Land. Recorded and released between 1956 and 1961, these seven Monk combo albums were critical in Monk's emergence from a decade of ridicule and neglect to his status at the pinnacle of the jazz pantheon. The sextet sessions from which Quartet Plus Two At the Blackhawk sprung started out as a collaboration. The occasion was Monk's second visit to San Francisco. He took his current quartet — Monk on piano; Charlie House, tenor sax; John ore, bass; and Billy Higgins, drums. Plus he added two of the most impressive horn men available on the West Coast — trumpeter Joe Gordon, and tenor sax player Harold Land. This vibrant live performance took place at the famed San Francisco jazz club in 1960. While the entire album showcases the group's remarkable chemistry and improvisational prowess, several standout tracks exemplify the quintet's dynamic energy and innovative approach to jazz. "Epistrophy," the iconic Monk composition, is given new life in a live setting, with its infectious rhythms and memorable melody captivating the audience from the first note. The album displays brilliantly and evocatively several different facets of Monk — his artistry, and his magic. The addition of Land's horn makes for a very soulful set. Tommy Flanagan – Overseas (Mono)
58,00 €Add to cart"Overseas is very well recorded and the trio is well defined in a space with stereo-like width and depth. Kevin Gray's remastering of the mono LP is exceptional." — Recording = 8.5/10; Music = 9/10 — Dennis D. Davis, Hi-Fi +, Issue 95 When Jay Jay Johnson toured Sweden in the summer of 1957, his pianist, Tommy Flanagan, drew accolades. Flanagan’s playing on Miles Davis’ tunes such as "Vierd Blues," and "In Your Own Sweet Way" had made hipper Swedes already aware of his abilities. Among these were executives for Metronome Records, and the result was Flanagan’s first recording date under his own name, in Stockholm on Aug. 15, 1957. Flanagan later in his career became known as the "Jazz Poet," an artist whose consummate lyricism and remarkably smooth swing feel have long captivated listeners. Happily, the complex, pliant lines, the rhythmic snap, and that great taste in tunes were already in place when the Detroit-born, Bud Powell-influenced Flanagan arrived in New York in the late 1950s. No wonder he soon played and/or recorded with Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, and others. This choice album — Flanagan’s first — was made in Sweden while the pianist was touring with Johnson’s quintet, which included bassist Wilbur Little and drummer Elvin Jones. The appealing program boasts Billy Strayhorn’s lulling "Chelsea Bridge," Charlie Parker’s lively "Relaxin’ at Camarillo," the crafty original "Eclypso" — part calypso, part swing — a blues, and two numbers dedicated to Swedish climes

Willie Dixon & Memphis Slim – Willie’s Blues (Stereo)
58,00 €Show itemSince the early 1950s, Willie Dixon has been the studio kingpin of Chicago blues, having written, produced, and played bass on countless classics by Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Otis Rush, Koko Taylor, and many others. Dixon has always managed to find time away from the studio to work as a performer, slapping his upright bass and singing his own tunes in a highly compelling, conversational baritone. He was working the coffeehouse circuit with pianist Memphis Slim when he cut this, his first album as a leader, in 1959. Besides his unique interpretations of “Nervous” and “Built for Comfort,” it includes eight lesser known compositions from Dixon’s prolific pen. It is unlike all other albums by Dixon, as he and Slim are accompanied, not by the usual crew of Chicago blues players, but by a group of New York mainstream jazzmen, including tenor saxophonist Hal Ashby, guitarist Wally Richardson and drummer Gus Johnson.

Zoot Sims – Passion Flower (Zoot Sims Plays Duke Ellington)
54,00 €Add to cart180-gram vinyl Mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab from the original analog master tape Pressed at Quality Record Pressings Housed in a Stoughton Printing tip-on jacket Here is an album of Duke Ellington compositions arranged and conducted by Benny Carter, with Zoot Sims as principal soloist. Add those names to the list of musicians in the adjoining display and you get a total greater than the sum of its parts. Among the many albums Sims made for Pablo, the Ellington project was particularly close to his heart. The Ellington band of 1940 and '41 was a formative influence on the young tenor man setting out on his career. The great tenor saxophonist Ben Webster's solos profoundly affected him. It is true that his tone was closer to Lester Young's, but Webster's conception was always a major component of Sims's style, and toward the end of his life Zoot's sound took on more of Webster's heft and darkness. Fittingly, he and Webster's favorite pianist, Jimmy Rowles, do Bojangles to a rare turn, and Sims gives an achingly beautiful reading of Duke's "Your Love Has Faded." Mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab from the original analog master tape, and pressed at Quality Record Pressings for optimal sound quality, this Analogue Productions 180-gram reissue is an exceptional audiophile disc. Housed in a gatefold Stoughton Printing tip-on jacket.
