Included in the December title releases for the the series is the iconic Peggy Lee's first 12-inch album, Black Coffee (1956). Black Coffee was Peggy Lee's album smash for Decca (she left Capitol in 1952 over creative, artistic differences) and it offered her an intimate stage with a small jazz combo, exchanging her usual jazz-pop style with a big band or orchestra. This smaller combination worked to perfection. "Encouraged by longtime Decca A&R Milt Gabler, she hired a small group including trumpeter Pete Candoli and pianist Jimmy Rowles (two of her favorite sidemen) to record an after-hours jazz project similar in intent and execution to Lee Wiley's "Manhattan project" of 1950, Night in Manhattan. While the title-track opener of Black Coffee soon separated itself from the LP — to be taught forever after during the first period of any Torch Song 101 class — the album doesn't keep to its concept very long; Lee is soon enough in a bouncy mood for 'I've Got You Under My Skin' and very affectionate on 'Easy Living.' (If there's a concept at work here, it's the vagaries of love.) Listeners should look instead to 'It Ain't Necessarily So' or 'Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good to You?' for more examples of Lee's quintessentially slow-burn sultriness. Recorded on November 17th, 1959, Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges has been heralded as one of Mulligan's best collaborations with fellow instrumentalists. On this date, the two saxophonists were joined by a solid rhythm section of Claude Williamson (piano), Buddy Clark (bass), and Mel Lewis (drums). The tracklist pulls from both artist's repertoires, featuring three originals each from Mulligan and Hodges. The two complement the other throughout with the exception of Mulligan's "What's the Rush," where the baritonist sits out altogether in favor of Hodges' alto taking the spotlight. Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges is the second Hodges collaboration to be reissued by Verve. Earlier this year, Acoustic Sounds re-released Side By Side, one of two 1959 LPs he recorded with Duke Ellington. He taught himself to play guitar at the age of 9, and would play dances and parties while working as a sharecropper as he grew into adulthood. His first recordings, made for Okeh Records in 1928, were commercial failures. However, Dick Spottswood and Tom Hoskins, a blues enthusiast, located Hurt in 1963 and persuaded him to move to Washington, D.C. He was recorded by the Library of Congress in 1964. This helped further the American folk music revival, which led to the rediscovery of many other bluesmen of Hurt's era. Hurt performed on the university and coffeehouse concert circuit with other Delta blues musicians who were brought out of retirement. He also recorded several albums for Vanguard Records. Hurt returned to Grenada, Mississippi, in 1966, where he passed away at the age of 73. Today! is the second studio album, but third body of work recorded by Hurt. It was released in 1966 by Vanguard Records. This album contains some of the first commercial material recorded after his "rediscovery" in 1963, and is the first he recorded for Vanguard. The album spans several genres and styles of music, ranging from traditional blues andfolk songs, to country, to African-American spirituals. In 2009, the album was one of 25 selections that were added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry. According to Rolling Stone, Hurt is "the rare Delta blues legend who bowls you over with grace, generosity, and warmth." The iconic bluesman's 1966 album It Serve You Right to Suffer for Impulse! was unusual because it teamed him with a jazz ensemble rather than a typical blues band. This setup was part of Impulse!'s broader effort to explore and expand the boundaries between jazz, blues, and other genres. The collaboration was partly driven by the growing interest in the blues among jazz audiences in the 1960s. Hooker's raw, emotional music resonated with the improvisational spirit of jazz. Impulse! wanted to showcase his talents in a new light by pairing him with a sophisticated jazz rhythm section — guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Panama Francis. These musicians had deep jazz credentials but were flexible enough to adapt to Hooker's deeply personal and rhythmically unique style. The producer was Bob Thiele, head of the foundational jazz label Impulse! Records. The idea was to keep the tracklist down to just eight songs and let each one inhabit a mood, unencumbered by commercial demands for a single. For this release, we started with the original 3-track recording session tapes that were mixed down to a brand-new 30 ips quarter-inch stereo master tape by senior mastering engineer Vic Anesini at Battery Studios. From that stereo master tape, Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab cut the lacquers at 33 1/3 RPM utilizing the legendary Doug Sax's custom all-tube system and cutting lathe. The lacquers were plated and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. Lastly, the Stoughton Printing tip-on gatefold jacket with a deluxe scuff-resistant matte finish is the highest quality available. Originally released on either side of Smack Up, these albums underscore just how refreshingly creative Pepper was at the time. Gettin' Together's tight "Bijou the Poodle," penned by Pepper, leads the way, with Jazzwise admiring its "angularity...representing the darker side of the Californian jazz idyll." Often described as a sequel to Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Gettin' Together! once again finds Pepper backed on beat by Miles Davis alums (bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb). Meanwhile, the San Francisco Examiner sums up 1963's Intensity, the last release of his early period, as Pepper being "well on his way toward a new kind of playing freedom."
